Born in Ireland, McGinn came to the U.S. in 1884 and worked on several New York newspapers before becoming a sportswriter for Associated Press in 1893. Late in his career, he was known as the dean of New York sportswriters. McGinn was also an expert on boxing. He remained with AP until he became ill in 1921.
