Called up by the Cardinals for one start late in 1935, McGee defeated the Cubs 2-1 on a three-hitter. He went 16-10 in 1940. Traded to the Giants in May of 1941, he had 11 starts before finally winning a game that August; he finished 2-10. He had suffered a similar drought in 1938, losing nine a row. McGee was called Fiddler Bill because he played the violin.
