Sam Mertes

With the 1902 White Sox, Mertes led AL outfielders in assists, played at least one game at every position, and won the only game he ever pitched. The following year, as a Giants outfielder, he was the NL RBI champ, tied for the league lead in doubles, and led outfielders in fielding. His 108 RBI, 17 triples, and 52 stolen bases in 1905 put him near the top of the NL and helped New York to a World Championship. He was nicknamed Sandow after a renowned strongman of the day.
