At age 20 in 1910, Mitchell was one of the American League‘s top lefthanders, going 12-8 (2.60) for Cleveland. When he went 14-8 in 1913, his 1.74 ERA was third-best in the league. He led the Indians in wins and losses (12-17), games, complete games, and strikeouts in 1914.
