The brainy Mitchell began as a pitcher, relieving Cy Young in his and the Red Sox first-ever game, in 1901. Only moderately successful, he remained a ML pitcher until 1905 and resurfaced as a catcher with New York in 1910. He managed the Cubs from 1917-20, leading them to the 1918 pennant, and managed his hometown Boston Braves, 1921-23, before moving into the front office and coaching for 30 years at Harvard.
