Montague was a backup shortstop for the Indians for four seasons, then found his niche as a scout for the Giants from 1942 to 1981, signing Willie Mays. He later landed Ron Bryant and Bob Knepper for the Giants. In one season (1941), scouting for the Red Sox, he signed Mel Parnell. His son, Ed Montague, Jr., is a NL umpire.
