Carey was a $60,000 Yankee bonus baby out of St. Mary’s College (CA). He was a notorious eater; because of him, the Yankees stopped allowing players to sign for meals. Carey became New York’s regular third baseman in 1954, hitting .302. In July 1955 he helped turn four double plays in a game, tying a ML record for third basemen. The emergence of Clete Boyer made Carey expendable, and he was traded to Kansas City for Bob Cerv in 1960.
