Eli Canel

Born in Buenos Aires of Scottish-Spanish descent, Canel worked as a reporter for the Associated Press in Latin America for seven years before moving to New York, where he broadcast Yankees home games in Spanish until 1972. Beginning in 1937, he broadcast 42 WS. His trademark line, translated, was “Don’t go away, this game is really getting interesting.” In 1985, the Hall of Fame voted him the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasters.
