Chaney led the Southern League in homers with 23 in 1968, but never hit more than 3 in a ML season. He spent seven years with the Reds, mostly as backup to shortstop Dave Concepcion. “There’s a whole bunch of clubs in the majors on which he could play regularly,” said manager Sparky Anderson. After Chaney was traded to the Braves in 1976, he became their starting shortstop and had his best year offensively (.252, 50 RBI), but his 37 errors led NL shortstops.
