In late July 1950, Church and Robin Roberts both pitched complete-game shutouts as the Whiz Kid Phillies swept a doubleheader from the Cubs. He was 8-6 as the Phils fought for their first pennant in 35 years but his season ended when he was struck in the face by a line drive off Ted Kluszewski‘s bat. In 1951 he bounced back with his top season, 15-11.
