Clingman was considered the fastest infielder with the most accurate arm of the 1890s while with Louisville (NL). As a third baseman, Clingman led the NL in assists in 1896 and in fielding average in 1897. Moved to shortstop in 1898, he led AL shortstops in fielding average and assists in 1901.
