Al Cowens

A journeyman hitter through most of his career, soft-spoken Cowens had his best year for the Royals in 1977, hitting .312 with 14 triples, 23 HR, and 112 RBI. He finished second to Rod Carew in the MVP voting. A good defensive outfielder with a strong arm, his only other season with a batting average over .277 was 1979, when he managed .295 despite missing three weeks when a pitch broke his jaw. In 1982 for the Mariners, he hit 20 home runs and in both 1982 and 1984 he drove in 78 runs, his second-best totals.
