Pat Corrales

Corrales, a poor hitter, spent much of his career as the backup catcher to Johnny Bench in Cincinnati. On September 29, 1965, he became one of only four ML players to reach base twice on catcher’s interference in the same game. He skippered the Rangers for two seasons and then the Phillies, who made him the only manager to be fired with his team in first place (7/18/83). Thirteen days later, Corrales replaced Mike Ferraro as the Indians’ manager. In 1986, Corrales charged Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart and tried to kick him but was quickly decked by a Stewart right to the jaw. Corrales was fired by Cleveland during the 1987 All-Star break, with the last-place Indians on their way to their second 100-loss season in three years.
