Jerry Narron

The light-hitting Narron was released by the Mariners after batting .222 with 17 RBI in 76 games in 1981, then was signed by the Angels and spent most of 1982-83 in the Pacific Coast League. He hit .301 with 27 HR and 102 RBI for Edmonton in 1983 to earn a promotion to the Angels, and spent the next three seasons as Bob Boone’s backup in California, never hitting higher than .247.

In October 1994, Narron was hired as the Texas Rangers‘ third-base coach. Seven years later, he was promoted to manage the club when Johnny Oates resigned a month into the 2001 season.

Narron, who broke in with the Yankees in 1979, was New York’s starting catcher the day after Thurman Munson was killed in an airplane crash. His uncle, Sam Narron, caught for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1935, 1942, and 1943.
