A graceful centerfielder whose defensive ability sportswriter Fred Lieb likened to that of Tris Speaker and Joe DiMaggio, Oliver thrilled Boston fans with his speed and strong arm. He lacked power but posted acceptable averages, and led the AL with 646 at-bats as a rookie in 1930.
