Steve Hovley

The free-spirited Stanford graduate once quipped, “Billy Graham is a cracker.” Hovley debuted with the one-year Pilots in 1969. Starting the season with a crewcut, he wouldn’t cut his hair, not wanting to discriminate against any particular hairs. A line-drive hitter with good speed, Hovley was generally a fourth outfielder and led the AL in pinch-hit appearances with Kansas City in 1972.
