Hubbell was the cause of a baseball rules change. With the Phillies in 1925, he walked a batter intentionally by throwing four times to first base, as there was no rule against it. When he did it again several weeks later, league president John Heydler threatened to suspend him. The following year the rule was changed, requiring that the pitches be made to the catcher.
