Johnny Gooch

Gooch was a dependable switch-hitter and slick-fielding catcher for Pittsburgh from 1922 through 1927 who platooned first with Walter Schmidt and then with Earl Smith. He hit .329 as a rookie, and was part of a Pirate youth movement that made them a powerhouse in the 1920s. Gooch was later a successful minor league manager and a Pittsburgh coach in 1937-38.
