Overlooked by the scouts, the strong-armed outfielder had to ask for a tryout in 1952. Green took up catching, but sat on the bench most of his short career. “If baseball ever adopted the two platoon system,” he once quipped, “I’d get $50,000: 25 for hitting, and 25 for sitting.”
