Signed off the Detroit sandlots, Gray was a hard-throwing star in WWII service ball. In the majors, the forkballer was hindered by chronic blisters and he held his ERA below 4.00 only once in nine seasons. After eight seasons with the Tigers, he appeared with four different teams in 1955.
