Alex Grammas

The good-fielding Grammas barely hit enough to stay in the lineup, but was the Cardinals’ everyday shortstop in 1954, 1955, and again in 1959. In between, he was a reserve with the Reds. His best average as a regular was .269 in 1959. He was the Pirate coach chosen to manage the last five games in 1969 after Larry Shepard was fired, and he piloted the Brewers to the basement in 1976 and 1977. He coached for Sparky Anderson in Cincinnati and Detroit.
