Johnny Groth

Time, Collier’s, The Saturday Evening Post, and Life all tabbed Groth for superstardom in 1949 after he hit .340 with 30 home runs for Buffalo (International League) in 1948. He hit .293 as the Tigers’ regular centerfielder, and in 1950 hit .306 with 12 homers and 85 RBI, at one point banging eight consecutive hits. Groth played 10 more seasons, but never equaled his 1950 totals.
