Folkers was best when used exclusively as a reliever, and his career year came with the 1974 Cardinals, when he went 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA. Traded to the Padres after the season in a three-way deal that also involved the Tigers, he became the subject of one of San Diego broadcaster Jerry Coleman’s famous malaprops when Coleman reported that “Rich Folkers is throwing up in the bullpen.”
