The bespectacled Foli led NL shortstops in fielding as a Pirate in 1980, and AL shortstops as an Angel two years later. He paced NL shortstops twice each in double plays and total chances, and once in putouts. In 1982 his 14 walks set an AL record for the fewest received by a player in 150 or more games (broken by Ozzie Guillen three years later). Foli was the Mets’ first draft pick in June 1968, and was traded with Ken Singleton and Mike Jorgensen to Montreal for Rusty Staub in 1972. The fiery Foli became the first Expo ever to hit for the cycle (4/21/76). He batted .333 in ten LCS and WS games for the World Champion 1979 Pirates. His older brother, Ernie, played minor league ball. Foli was a Ranger coach from 1985 to 1987.
