Phil Paine

While on leave from the U.S. military in 1953, Paine and Leo Kiley became the first U.S. major leaguers to play in the Japanese leagues. In nine games for the Nishitetsu Lions, Paine was 4-3 with a 1.77 ERA. His only full season in the U.S. was 1956 with the Cardinals, when in 46 relief appearances he was 5-1.
