Paulette saw little action as the backup first baseman to George Sisler. He was traded to the Cardinals in 1917, and the following year he played every position except catcher. He hit .288 in a career-high 562 at-bats for the Phillies in 1920, but after the season he was banned from baseball by Commissioner Landis for accepting gifts from gamblers.
