A strikeout pitcher with streaks of wildness, Moore whipped the ball in with an intimidating, sweeping sidearm motion. With Cleveland on May 9, 1901, he pitched the AL’s first no-hitter, but lost it, and the game, in the tenth, allowing Chicago two hits. In 1903 he led the league with a 1.77 ERA, going 19-9. He was a stubborn holdout for almost all of 1906 and was traded to New York in 1907. He won a career-high 22 games for the Phillies in 1910, leading the league in strikeouts, but his 19 losses the next year tied for the league’s most.
