A poet and satirist, Phelon spent 36 years as a baseball writer, beginning with the Chicago Daily News at age 18. He worked for the Chicago Tribune and New York Morning Telegraph before moving to the Cincinnati Times-Star in 1910. He was a founding member of the BBWAA, and his magazine articles gave him a national reputation.
