When Powers left Holy Cross to continue his education at Notre Dame, his friend Lou Sockalexis followed him. A great handler of young pitchers, while with the Athletics Powers was Eddie Plank‘s personal catcher. He died from internal injuries sustained or worsened while chasing a foul ball in Shibe Park‘s inaugural game, April 12, 1909.
