Jake Powell

Powell hit his peak with a 10-for-22 showing for the Yankees in the 1936 World Series. Reckless and prejudiced, he broke Tiger first baseman Hank Greenberg‘s wrist in 1935, continually fought with other players, and was suspended in 1938 because of antiblack slurs during a radio interview. At age 40, he committed suicide in a Washington, D.C. police station while being questioned on a bad-check charge.
