Powell, who never used an indicator to keep track of balls and strikes, thrived on confrontation. His short stay in the NL was attributed to his frequent run-ins with Giants manager John McGraw. He umpired 22 years in the Pacific Coast League, then served as supervisor of umpires for the National Association in 1953-54.
