At age 19, Davis opened in centerfield for Houston, but he was soon in the minors, where he struggled for eight seasons. In 1971, he was platooned in the Cubs outfield but hit a soft .256. Swapped to Milwaukee, he hit .318 in 85 games, 36 as a pinch hitter.
