Dickinson was sports editor of the New York Herald in its heyday, and his support in publicizing the Brotherhood helped get the Players ‘ League off the ground in 1890. HIs knowledge of telegraphy helped him to a scoop when he picked up news of a big deal going over the wire in a hotel lobby. He was later managing editor of the New York Evening Telegram.
