On April 21, 1898 Duggleby became the very first player to homer in his first ML at-bat, and remains the only man to accomplish the feat with a grand slam. Called Frosty Bill because he spurned the companionship of his teammates and dressed in a heavy black suit even in summer, Duggleby went 19-12 for the Phillies in 1901. When he and Nap Lajoie jumped the team to join the Athletics of the second-year American League, they were both enjoined in a lawsuit. Unlike Lajoie, Duggleby jumped back to the Phillies after just two appearances with Connie Mack‘s Athletics.
