Gilbert, a scrappy John McGraw-type player, was the keystone star of the Giants infield when they won pennants in 1904 and 1905. McGraw, managing Baltimore, had purchased Gilbert in 1902 to play shortstop. When McGraw took over the Giants in 1903, Gilbert came along and took charge of second base. Gilbert later managed in the minors and coached for the Boston Braves.
