Rowland had a varied baseball career. Beginning as a reserve catcher in the minors, he became a manager and team owner in the minors before becoming White Sox manager in 1915. Although he won the AL pennant and WS in 1917, he was let go after the 1918 season. He later served as an AL umpire for five seasons and president of the Pacific Coast League, and became executive vice-president of the Cubs in 1954.
