Baseball World Series MVP Winners

The New York chapter of the Baseball Writers of America established the Babe Ruth award in 1949, the year of the Babe’s death. This was the first World Series MVP award, and is still in existence, but has since been overtaken in prestige by the Sport Magazine award (given in cooperation with Chevrolet — part of the prize is a new Corvette.) The Sport Magazine award was first awarded in 1955.

Johnny Mize won the 1952 Babe Ruth Award, in acknowledgment of his stellar play in the World Series. Mize batted .400, with three home runs, but only had 18 plate appearances in the series (he started 5 of 7 games, and was usually lifted for a pinch runner or defensive replacement).

In accordance with its Big Apple beginnings, the Babe Ruth Award was awarded to a New York Yankee for every one of its first five years. The first five Babe Ruth Award winners: Joe Page, Jerry Coleman, Phil Rizzuto, Mize, and Billy Martin.
