With the Reds in the 1919 World Series, Ring beat Ed Cicotte 2-0, in a game the crooked “Black Sox” pitcher might have been trying to win. Ring ran up against honest Dickey Kerr in Game Six, losing after allowing one run in five innings of relief. Ring may have had previous experience with game-fixing; in 1918, he allegedly was paid $25 by notorious teammate Hal Chase after losing a game. With the Phillies, Ring led the NL in walks each year from 1922 through 1925, yet won a career-high 18 in 1923.
