Eller was an effective pitcher in his first four years with the Reds, peaking in the pennant-winning season of 1919, when he went 20-9 with a 2.39 ERA. That fall he threw a shutout in Game Five of the WS, with six consecutive strikeouts in the second and third innings, and a complete-game victory in the finale. But his WS achievements were tainted: the Reds’ opponents were the infamous “Black Sox,” bribed to throw the Series.
