Walt Weiss

Alfredo Griffin was traded after Weiss had shown he could handle the A’s shortstop job. Weiss went on to win the Rookie of the Year award in 1988, the third straight Oakland player to do so, as the A’s won the AL pennant. Known primarily for his steady fielding, he made a costly error in Game Four of the World Series, letting in a run in the third inning when Mike Davis‘s liner went off his glove in a game the A’s lost 4-3 to the Dodgers. After hitting .250 in 1988, his average plummeted in 1989.
