“Wehmeier was one of the finest natural athletes we ever had in Cincinnati,” said Reds GM Gabe Paul. The three-sport star turned down many college football scholarships to sign with the Reds in 1945. He was extremely wild, leading the league in walks in 1949, 1950, and 1952, and was booed bitterly by the fans, even when he won. After five successive losing seasons, he was sold to Philadelphia in 1954, then traded to St. Louis. He won a career-high 12 games for the Cardinals in 1956. He scouted for the Reds from 1959 through 1961.
Later he worked for a trucking firm, and he collapsed and died while testifying in an embezzlement trial.
