White homered for the Giants in his first major league at-bat (5/7/56). Though he topped the 20-HR mark eight times, he was more of a line-drive hitter than a slugger. A feared clutch hitter, with the Cardinals in 1961 he tied Ty Cobb‘s ML record by getting 14 hits in consecutive doubleheaders July 17 and 18. He drove in more than 100 runs four times. He was also a stylish, lefthanded first baseman who, from 1960 through 1966, won seven consecutive Gold Gloves. He retired as a player after the 1969 season and in 1971 began a long career as a Yankees broadcaster.
