One of the original members of the BBWAA, Wheeler was a writer with the New York Herald from its founding in 1907. He was a ghostwriter for Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Eddie Collins, as well as many famous military and political figures. At his death, he was chairman of the board for North American Newspaper Alliances
