Williams led his minor leagues in hit batsmen four consecutive years (1979-82) before being dispatched to the bullpen, and he finally made the Giants as a reliever in 1984. After splitting 1985-86 between San Francisco and Phoenix (Pacific Coast League), he was traded to the Reds and spent two years in their bullpen before being released after the 1988 season. Williams pitched a complete game shutout in his lone ML start.
