Todd Worrell

A college All-American and the Cardinals’ first-round draft choice, the fireballing Worrell struggled as a starter in the minors. During the 1985 season, he was moved to the bullpen, and an overnight transformation occurred. Called up to St. Louis, he won three in relief, saved five, and tied a World Series record by fanning six straight Royals in Game Five.

Worrell consistently threw in the 93-95 mph range utilizing a fastball and very hard slider. In 1986 he was a near-unanimous choice for NL Rookie of the Year as he set a league record for saves (36) by a rookie. In 1988 Worrell became the only pitcher in history to record 30 saves in each of his first three full seasons and the only Cardinal to have three 30-save seasons. On occasion, the 6’5″ righthander would move to right field in a pitching platoon arrangement.
