Kerfeld was a breath of fresh air as an enthusiastic, wisecracking, and obese 6’6″ righthander who won 11 games and saved seven for the 1986 NL West champion Astros. But his weight problems forced him back to the minors after a horrendous start in 1987, and elbow trouble has put his pitching career in jeopardy.
