Named International League MVP in 1969, Alvarado failed to hit in three trials with Boston. Traded to the White Sox on December 1, 1970 with Mike Andrews for Luis Aparicio, he was expected to replace Aparicio at shortstop. But the slick-fielding Puerto Rican with the quick release never hit above .232.
