Gene Richards

Before Tony Gwynn came along, Richards’s .291 lifetime batting average was the highest in Padres history. He excelled at all three outfield positions and led the majors in outfield assists with 21 in 1980. As a rookie in 1977, he stole 56 bases. In 1980 Richards, Ozzie Smith, and Jerry Mumphrey each stole over 50 bases, becoming the first teammate trio in NL history to do so.
