Ernest Riles

A versatile infielder who finished third in the 1985 AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Ozzie Guillen and teammate Ted Higuera, Riles started at shortstop for the Brewers in 1986, but injured an index finger in a household accident before the 1987 season and spent the first half of the year on rehabilitation in the minors. The former Texas League batting champion (.349 at El Paso in 1983) was traded to the Giants in 1988 for Jeffrey Leonard. His promising performance in the minors failed to produce similar major-league success, as he never cracked the .300 barrier in the bigs.
