Philip Roth

The noted American novelist grew up in Newark as a fan of the Bears’ outstanding Triple-A teams of the 1930s. In 1973, he wrote The Great American Novel, a satire about a team of 50-year-olds trotted out of retirement during WWII who lose their stadium and play all their games on the road.
